48% Greenvillians are "Medically Underserved."

221,000 Greenvillians are “medically underserved,” those who are uninsured, under insured, or have access barriers. These are those who don’t have access to the health system due to cost, transportation, lack of a medical home, or have other access issues. The number of underserved has risen over the years from 30% in 1998 to almost half in 2012.

The medically underserved population, especially the underinsured is growing dramatically.

There are 53,000 more underserved Greenvillians than in 2008.

Transportation is an Issue for the Underserved

Only 8% of Greenvillians have difficulty arranging transportation to medical services, and only 7% delayed getting medical treatment because of difficulty in arranging transportation, of those with income under $15,000 a year, one quarter have difficulty arranging transportation and have delayed getting treatment because of transportation.
