September 2014 Momentum
“Financial Health and Stability”

To conclude the Health and Wellness quarter, we are shifting the focus from physical health to financial stability. Poverty is a growing issue in Greenville County. The median household income in Greenville County is $46,115, yet more than 62,000 Greenville residents (15%) still live below the poverty line. One in eight families (13%) in Greenville County lives in poverty, an increase of almost 70% since 2000. The gap between rich and poor continues to expand.

A priority goal of the United Way of Greenville County and Vision 2025 is to increase the percentage of financially stable families in Greenville County. They recognize that financial stability is a tenet of a healthy community and support programs such as workforce development, tax assistance, and more.

How do we meet basic needs (food, shelter, education) of those living in poverty, while still building towards long-term financial stability? How do we balance living wages with the increasing costs of housing, food, healthcare, and more? What are some creative solutions to build financial stability in Greenville County for all residents?
